anyone know how the ice is forming in rjukan. Heading there in early January, looking quite warm at the moment

In reply to td72:

Was there last weekend. Only Gausta with decent ice build-up. Bullen at Krokan was getting climbed but quite lean and much harder than WI3. You could probably top-rope some other stuff. Some routes at Kroken were far too wet to climb. River had just a thin layer of ice on its surface. Trappfossen looked on the way. Warm forecast on the run-up to Christmas as you say.

It's expected to be 8 degrees in Rjukan this sunday. Appear to be getting a similar weather pattern to Scotland over xmas.

It was alright!

In reply to GarethSL:

It was ok for about a month. Didn't really get cold until late Jan and by late Feb it was getting too warm. Only the higher venues in condition as well. Everything felt silly soft in the Upper Gorge I thought but still some enjoyable climbing. I didn't see reason to visit until the last week in January last winter but would guess there was more ice now verses last season. Forecast looks ominous though.

The winters here are getting worse and worse! Have you come north yet? Conditions are good, but the valley is getting busier and busier by the year!

Also, are you planning on visiting the ice festival this year?
Climber Phil 17 Dec 2015
In reply to GarethSL:
For a very short spell. Temps were going from +10 to -8 night on a day to day basis. We went at the beginning of Feb as the year before we went in March and it was getting too warm then
In reply to GarethSL:

Where north are you speaking of? We're heading out with a group to the Ice Festival this year, but just trying to think of contingency plans if the weather craps out!

For example this is the weather today (map of Southern Norway):

Rjukan is well in the plus. Colder parts of the Southerm half of Norway are nearly always towards the centre so this is where I would make a plan B. Eg Hemsedal, Valdres, Oppdal, areas north of Lillehammer.
