Looking at getting a waist pack - mainly for fell running and the odd long road run.
Don't want a big one so was looking at a 3 litre one but unsure how much I'd get in one

Typically, it'd need in it a waterproof, a 500ml bottle of water, hat, gloves and a few gels

Would I squeeze all that in?

I have the OMM 3 litre one and I can fit all that in, yes. It depends on your waterproof I guess, mine's just a light-as-feather pertex job.

I've got the Lowe lightflite Hydro http://www.trekitt.co.uk/6995/products/lowe-alpine-lightflite-hydro-olympia... and its plenty big enough for my waterprooof (Marmot Super Mica), mobile, hat/gloves, 1st aid kit and sweets/gels. (in reality its a little too big for that gear) so providing you have a small waterproof then a 3ltr should be ok.

I have a couple of these http://www.raidlight.com/en/organisation/2900-pochette-multi.html#/color-an... They help with extra storage for gels/malt loaf if needed.

i bought a waistpack a couple of years ago and we really didn't get on. i started my run with the pouch and the water bottle at the back but the whole thing kept riding round on me so the bottle was on my hip. i kept tightening the belt but it continued to happen. most uncomfortable. so, we split up and i shacked up with this: http://www.outside.co.uk/shop/SJ+Ultra+Vest+v2+with+Body+Bottle+Plus . took it for a test run on saturday morning on a pretty flat test run around fernilee reservoir. a bit weird having carrying water around your chest and we took a little while to get acquainted but i think we're going to get on.

I've had similar issues with my OMM waistpack. I want a racevest instead, but so far have been unable to find one to suit my Brian-Blessed chest size...

The king of all bum bags imho:

Zero bounce for me and has that old skool look that will set you apart for these ultra running twonks with their fancy race vests.......

I don't carry water though. It's more than enough for mandatory FRA kit and I can fit my ME Ultratherm/primaloft smock and snacks in as well if I'm on a solo winter mission.

you'll be surprised what you can squeeze in, sometimes I think that's never all going to fit in there, it's tiny! It some times take a while until it's all in, and I quite often just set off with some bits hanging out of the sides but no one seems to care that much, so far I've never lost any of my bits.

Good luck.

Additionally, if you don't need quite that much stuff, the flipbelt is the best solution I've come across. particularly for carrying a phone without it bouncing about and without the belt being uncomfortable around my waist. Possibly one of those soft water bottles could fit in too; I haven't tried yet.
