Anyone got any recommendations for good movies or TV series in Spanish?

Pans labyrinth, the Devils backbone.

I like bombon el perro too, won't be to everyone's taste (not that much happens), but it is set in patagonia. ..

Mindbending time travel thing without state of the art special effects.

Have you seen any films by Almodovar? Kind of a twisted genius.

I'd hesitate to recommend them to anyone without knowing their tastes first, and beware, some are very bad. There's quite a good dark thriller/horror one (The Skin I Live In), many of the others are (melo)dramas my favourite of which is Volver.

In reply to Jon Stewart:

Too right. Forgot about that one- excellent movie...

Jamón Jamón - early P Cruz - very good
In reply to humptydumpty:

Just about anything by that forgotten genius, Bunuel. E.g Tristana, Belle de Jour, the Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, and the amazing, shocking Viridiana.

Haven't seen anything anyone's recommended so far, but twisted genius sounds good to me! Thanks all - I'd better get down to Blockbuster...

The Telephone Box (La Cabina).
Spanish freaky horror thing. No gore or monsters, just disturbing, in an intense way.
Don't read the wiki as it contains spoliers.

An old film (1993) and I've not seen it for years, but I used to love a film called The Red Squirrel (La Ardilla Roja).

The films title comes from the name of a campsite, but not the one many users of this forum will be familiar with.

Wild Tales. A film of 6 short stories. All in Spanish. A fantastic watch.

Rec is an excellent 'found footage' style horror film.

Almodovar is so obviously massively influenced by Bunuel, whom I mentioned above. He's nothing like as great, because he lacks that extraordinary satirical wit, but still very good in a very special, surreal Spanish way. If you want to see 'twisted genius' on a grand scale, so great that it influenced almost all politically and socially satirical films from ever on, please look at Viridiana. If you can find it (it was banned in its day by the Vatican).

I especially like Carne Tremula, based on a Ruth Rendell story and starring a young Javier Bardem.

Completely unrelated but I came across a prison drama called Celda 211 which is pretty grim but worth a watch

Narcos, great recent TV offering from Netflix about Pablo Escobar - maybe you can turn subtitles off?
