Apparently he purchased land in Patagonia the size of Cyprus for conservation. Damn he was wealthy...

Why The North Face? I imagine it'd be his wife, children or maybe whatever organisation he set up to create the national park?

That article misspells Yvon Chouinard's last name in the first sentence, but gets it right later on.

Doug's fortune came from Esprit, which was posting yearly revenues of $1 billion and profits of $80,000. He sold the North Face for spare change at $50,000.

As for his estate, his wife, two daughters, a brother, and his mother survive him, and he has a conservation foundation.

Wish there were more entrepreneurs like him - used his wealth wisely. A loss. This Guardian article is more extensive btw:

- and there's this from one of the guys who survived the accident:

A sad accident. I am surprised that a man with his experience in the outdoors wasn't wearing a drysuit.

In reply to Gone:

Maybe it was a matter of attitude or philosophy - the Guardian piece had this:

"Rarely appearing outdoors without a collared shirt or a cashmere sweater, Tompkins seemed determined to prove that no specialty clothing was needed on an adventure."
