It seems he was bought up as a Hindu and converted to Islam.

How common is that? I thought the two religions hated each other?

More common than you'd think. There's a few Jewish > Muslim converts out there too. Plenty of Hindu and Muslims convert to Christianity and Buddhism. To be expected when you have two major cultural/religious groups within a defined geographical space. More common in India and Israel than U.K. for obvious reasons.

My personal 'religion' is based upon this http://www.compassionatemind.co.uk/ (it's a sort of Buddhism but with the woo woo removed - sorry...) but I wouldn't judge anyone if it didn't suit them.
