Hello

I am getting back into climbing (and therefore UKC) after about three years off and wondered if anyone would be able to update me on the big climbing news of the last few years? For example, has Ondra given up climbing to become a Weird Al Yankovic tribute act? Bullet points are accepted/encouraged as are funny stories.

Cheers in advance

Oddly, weird Al Yankovic has given up parodies of popular songs and now cranks V13 like a demon.

- Some lad with 9 fingers and his mate climbed something really hard in America
- In bouldering there have been breakthroughs in bobble hat and step ladder design
- I'm still leading VS like it aint no thang

That's about it I think. Welcome back.

There are 47 new designs of assisted belay devices on the market that promise to make even the most cack handed simpleton able to belay safely while allowing him to roll cigarettes while he gazes at he pretty climber on the next pitch. And in lots of fancy colours too.

Furthermore, there are 5,368 new designs of karabiner on the market (there weren't nearly enough before) and Rockfax has published 432 new guides to Peak Gritstone.

Edit: I almost forgot... there are now 23 different ways to lock a karabiner if you found that screwgates simply weren't expensive or fancy enough.

The percentage of rock climbers (indoor and out) and winter climbers using footwear and ice axes, respectively, so over-specified for the use to which they are put that they are in fact a hindrance has risen to 66%.

And the price of climbing shoes have tripled in the years you been out. A better investment than property they are.

Ben Moon got back into climbing recently as well and climbed 9a. No pressure.

The long overdue retro bolting of Stanage has been hugely popular. Likewise the mass adoption of dry tooling on multi pitch mountain routes.

Aye, I hear he does like the odd hop around the Peak District.

Oh and some bloke called Alex Honnold has become really famous for learning to climb 5.12 before he's learnt to tie in.

You are doubtless referring to crampons on Northumberland sandstone?

(To the OP: crampons on Northumberland sandstone are still a controversial fashion statement)
