Does anybody know what the current status of Culra is ? I'd heard officially closed but unofficially open. Thanks

I guess it depends on how much you value your health..

Any idea what that means?

No but I'm intrigued. Cab anyone else shed some light on this ?

You could always hire nearby Camusericht lodge on the estate. Its low season so a snip at only £4525/wk.

Not sure what inappropriate action their referring to. The bothy was condemned by professional surveyors over a year ago, still no word on when/if it will be demolished and rebuilt. In the meantime I'd stay at Ben Alder cottage further round the loch (NN 499 680), I hear asbestosis is a pretty bad way to end your days!

I saw a thing online purporting to be from the Maintenance Organizers that implied that badly conducted testing at some point had exposed the asbestos, thereby creating the immediate health hazard that meant the bothy had to be closed.

No idea myself, obviously.

Edit: the comment on this:

I ran into a fairly senior member of the MBA in another bothy last year and asked about the situation there, he also said that the asbestos survey itself had caused the closure as it had involved ripping chunks of the stuff out of the walls and causing irreparable damage to the structure. I believe the asbestos had been known about for some time but was ok until the survey.

I believe that is the case. Best to avoid the place in the circumstances.

Booo, on the plus side it may help keep ben alder a bit quieter, on the minus side it will probably make ben alder bothy busier which was amazingly quiet when I visited (we were the only ones there).
