Looking for location ideas for a family camping holiday to Austria - we've two girls 7 and 10. Looking to do some alpine walking (they've done 5-6 munros), easy mountain biking, and maybe a bit of cragging or easy via ferrata. Camping on a low key small campsite rather than a massive commercialised affair. Thinking possibly Alpbach or the Tirol, but open to ideas & suggestions.

Is there any particular reason you want to camp? If it's because you like it, then fair enough, but if it's for financial reasons then it's worth having a good think. We went to Saalbach last year, and were planning to campervan it. Having looked at a few forums we realised that staying in a hotel was substantially cheaper overall. Most of the htels give you a free card that gets you on the chairlifts (and I think the swimming pool ) for free It won't affect you as much if you're not using the gondolas much but once we subtracted the cost of the lift pass from the hotel then we were paying -£6 per night each full board en suite in a pretty good hotel. (yes that was a minus sign in front of the £) It was just nuts. 96 euros per night half board for me and the wife. Kids were free. 4 free lift passes for the week. Felt a bit daft leaving the campervan outside the hotel for the week, but at least it was somewhere to lock the bikes.

The hills around there are definitely more hills than mountains, so not very serious. More rambling than mountaineering.

The main problem is the biking, it's either pretty steep downhill or endless tedious fire roads very little in between. If your kids aren't much cop at cycling then they may not enjoy it that much.

Anyway check out hotels in whatever resort you go for. Many of them are piss cheap in summer

well you will get that package close to anywhere in austria. every village in the alps now seems to have at least one ferrata, there's cragging almost anywhere ...

some areas you might not have thought of:

- Unteres Ennstal, Upper austria, good cragging, a national park, some via ferrata and nice walks

salzkammergut, more touristy, all of the above + lakes for swimming.

Thanks for the replies - have plumped for Zell am Ziller. Ten days camping in a small campsite with a swimming pool, for 44 euros a night and what appears to be lots of choice for outdoor activities - bring it on!
