1865: the Golden Age of Mountaineering, by Gilles Modica, documents one of the greatest times in the history of alpinism.

From the Wetterhorn in 1854 to the Matterhorn in 1865 – from triumph to tragedy – the Alps were conquered in a decade. It was what Reverend W.A.B. Coolidge called the ‘golden age of alpinism’, the era of the first great guides and ‘gentlemen climbers’. Summits were no longer scaled in the name of science, but for the beauty and difficulty of ascents that embodied the pleasure of mountaineering.

Featuring 350 photographs and illustrations and lavishly produced, this new book is co-published in English and French by Vertebrate Publishing and Éditions Paulsen. It will be published on 9 May 2016.

SPECIAL OFFER: pre-order now and save 20%. To pre-order a copy of the book for £31.20 (RRP £39), including UK mainland delivery, go to http://tinyurl.com/GoldenAgeMountaineering. Offer ends 9 May 2016. Books will be dispatched on – or shortly before – the publication date.
