After struggling up a few modest routes at Cheddar last weekend and perusing the imposing cliffs all around a thought struck me - to create a mid grade climbing paradise all that is required is to turn the entire Gorge upside down, then those endless stacks of roofs and awkward undercuts would transform into friendly ledges and jugs. See what I mean? -

You'd need to be careful how you turned it over, otherwise it might become an awesome overhanging wall.

Maybe we have to do this as a trade off - one inversion that provides a new punter paradise for one that becomes a new venue for cutting edge hard climbs - good luck with the polished edges on Idwal slabs once they are the vital holds on a relentless overhang!

Think big, flip the Matterhorn! All these downward sloping, roof tile slabs instantly become 1000m overhanging VS jug ladders.

You almost got it right. Considering the number of sidepulls and gastons, turning it 90 degrees would be perfect.

If Cheddar were upside down all those sidepulls and gastons would still be there and you might have decent footledges to use them from!

The trouble with ledges is you can hit them when you fall. Have you thought about shaving or grating the edges off

1. Carreg Hyll-Drem. Will be an improvement.

But for 2., the Cromlech, it won't make any difference [except for the Right Wall section of the girdle, which will become E10].

Rotate Stanage through 90 degrees, and you would get an extremely narrow big wall (about 5/6 El Cap's)...

It would for the lower-graded routes either side though... Spiral Stairs would go up a fair few grades and Flying Buttress would have a hoofing great stalactite to negotiate! Come to think of it - That could be fun!
