Hi,

I'm heading to Knoydart this weekend for a weeks wandering and wondered if anybody has any up-to-date knowledge on the snow conditions there?
We'll aim to take in the Munros and I want to know whether it's likely I'll need an axe and crampons?

Thanks all

Tom

I was in Glen Shiel on Saturday. There was lots of snow up high. It's patchy, and likely to be more so by the weekend, but there was a lot still left on ridges, so unavoidable. I could not see into Knoydart but I'd imagine similar. You should definitely bring axe and crampons just in case

I was in Knoydart last Thursday which is a lifetime away as far as condition reports go but it was very wintery, snowing down to sea level. You can check this webcam for a view of Beinn Sgritheal and Ladhar Bheinn.

Those webcam shots don't look very snowy to me and Knoydart is very different to Glen Shiel as far as snow cover goes, owing to the proximity of the sea. Outside deepest winter, it melts on Sgritheall and Ladhair Bhein usually within a few hours of falling, whereas it hangs around on the five sisters for weeks or months. I'd probably still pack crampons and axe if you're travelling by car but I doubt you'll need them.

I expect you've already gone, but for anyone else - we were on Ladhar Bheinn yesterday and apart from a few avoidable patches there's nothing left, no need for axe or crampons
In reply to Simon Caldwell:

Were there two of you, Simon? I think we (three) passed you on our way up.

In reply to Colin Henderson:

Yes, two of us. We went up via Stob a' Chearcaill, descended via Stob a Choire Odhair. We spotted another group ascending a couple of hundred metres away as we left the ridge towards Choire Dhorcaill, probably around 3pm ish, was that you?

Great weekend despite the slightly disappointing weather!
In reply to Simon Caldwell:
That would have been us. We saw two folk on the Stob a Choire Odhair ridge., which presumably was you. But not long after we met a male and a female descending from the summit of Ladhar Bheinn back towards Stob a' Chearchaill way so it must have been someone else.

We kayaked in from Kinloch Hourn. It was a long paddle out into the wind

In reply to Colin Henderson:

Were you part of the group camped at Kinloch Hourn on Friday night?
In reply to Simon Caldwell:

Yep. I think there were three separate groups there, all kayaking. We were nearest the bridge.
