Run Fast, Run Free (E5 6a) I backed off of the approach pitch of Run Fast Run Free at Gogarth Upper Tier yesterday while intending to belay my partner on the main route, due to a very large seagull having built a nest at the stance and getting very angry with me. Just letting anyone know that wants to do the route in the near future. It might bugger off soon though. Also left a sling round a spike so i could down-climb without dying.

Next time, placate it with chips. Or a small child.

Was thinking more along the lines of a 12 gauge

They do like children but probably couldn't eat a whole one.

Bit harsh. It's probably wondering what the hell you're doing in his house.
In reply to planetmarshall:

Haha I'm kidding, but I swear it was 10ft tall with rows of sharp teeth

I've always found that getting them to swallow a large cam and then releasing the trigger bar can deter them. Somewhat.

They can be a pest but - as pointed out above - do we have more right to be there than them?

This one was quite mellow a couple of years back I remember. We just got on with it.

In reply to James Beaumont:

Some birds need protection from interference by climbers, and so climbers institute a voluntary bird ban.

Seagulls are generally more than looking after themselves! Judging from the logbook comments on (for example) Chair Ladder, the seagulls have instituted a 'voluntary' climber ban during their nesting season... I personally would stay well away!
