What demise? My guidebook collection is ever expanding. My collection of apps is non existent.

dont know why apps would catch on in the short / medium term- phones need recharging all the time, touch screens are hard to use in cold/ wet - phone screens are hard to see in bright sunlight and guide books look good on the bookshelf.

I think there is a use for both. Right now for multi-pitch I end up taking photos of the guide book on my phone so I can check the guide at the belay stance.

It's a _real_ shame that the UK Climbing guys haven't made a decent app for this site yet. All it needs is to store offline all the information for a crag (descriptions, comments and pictures) and they would be onto a winner. You still want the guide book but all comments and grade votes are really useful before you start a climb.

Instead they have decided to sell guides, but there coverage is really bad as they haven't done many and in any case half the crags are covered by Climbers Club not Rockfax.

Was at the crag recently, when a climber with highly dog-eared, black and white, ancient CC guide came around asking which routes we were on. I made a joking remark that perhaps his guidebook could be retired - to which he replied that the modern ones are crap, because they're full of photos. I hadn't the heart to tell him of the existence of the rockfax app... or to point out that he was the one having to ask people which routes they were on...
