I do ultra marathons and like to listen to music at points

I listen to Queens of Stone Age/Kasabian/Linkin Park/Leftfield/The offspring/AWOL Nation/Chas and Status and Faith No More

I need to expand my bands - can anyone recommend bands similar to above??

I listened to these bands too and then I discovered M83 (in particular the album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming). I never imagined I'd shun Indie Rock in favour of french electro-pop but I have!

Do you need music to drive you on, or to sustain you when you're in the zone? Different places, different music...

Radiohead's Kid A and Amnesiac are pretty decent 'long journey' albums.

Boards of Canada (Lots of), Ladytron, Early Jean Michel Jarre

not a band but try Paul Anka or perhaps Toby Keith

I think Modest Mouse are great, especially the albums we were dead before the ship even sank & good news for people who love bad news.

For music to spur you on through exercise I think you can't really beat Rage Against the Machine or Metallica.

Chas and Status? The supergroup everyone's been waiting for since Dave's departure.

A third vote for Tame Impala. Currents is a great album.
Black Keys has some good bluesy rock; Attack and Release and Brothers are probably my favourite.
LTJ Bukem: Progression level 1 gives some classic drum and bass but avoid the version on iTunes which is not the original. For a pretty hard drum and bass mix, get DJ Craze's mix of Adam F's Drum and Bass Warfare. David Bowie's Earthling is a really good album as well - the Trent Reznor remixes are strong. Another vote for Nine Inch Nails.
New Leftfield album is pretty weak and nothing compared to Leftism, but almost any Chemical Brothers album is worth a listen and would be good on a run - Dig Your Own Hole and Further are excellent.
Grimes - Visions is a really good album. Don't go near Art Angels. Don't know what happened there. Completely dire.
Soulwax - Any Minute Now is another good one for a run. If you can download an 2ManyDJs mixes on Soulwax, they are fun and would keep you going.
System of a Down. Definitely.

Looking at what you listening to try ministry but be selective as their really old stuff is 80s synth pop and their newest fairly average metal.
NWO off of this album is a belter https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psalm_69:_The_Way_to_Succeed_and_the_Way_to...

Agreed!

Btw are you following their US tour at the mo (the set lists are awesome) and you seeing them in the UK later this year?

In reply to iusedtoclimb:

rather than give you a huge list, I've filtered it down to this one suggestion.

At The Drive In, Relationship of Command (2000)

The opening track will give you convulsions (in a good way)

Enjoy!
In reply to iusedtoclimb:

listen to Marc Riley on 6 Music 7 - 9pm then Gideon Coe from 9 - midnight. Monday - Thursday.

You will hear lots of great new, and obscure (at least to me) older music. Can listen for 5 hours and hear few tunes I have heard before. Many of which have me searching amazon for their cd's.

The music - the finest band going (or not anymore ;-/ ) in my humble opinion.

Self titled first album
Welcome to the north - 2004
Strength in numbers - 2008
Singles and EP's 2001 - 2005

No finer music to listen to whilst running and it always surprises me how few people are into them...but that's kinda cool too.
