Was climbing on Stanage last night. Late finish, 10:30. We heard a Snipe. Lovely sound, although my mate thought it was the sheep.
Heard them before in Scotland. Pabay and Mingulay, but never this far south.
Anyone else heard one in the Peak?

Whereabouts?
I was at the pop end last night until about 10pm ish.
I don't think I heard it (though I wouldn't have recognised it if I had - I just googled up a few recordings to listen to). Now that I know what it sounds like, I'll listen out in future.

I did hear a Curlew though, which is not unusual of course, but lovely all the same.

Yep walking back from the pop end.
I remember being on Pabay some years ago when one of the Jackobite MC told me about the sound.
Just looked them up on the RSPB site, they have a sound recording on there. Defo a smipe. RSPB say they are wetland birds. That dont say much for Stanage. I guess the flat area beneath the crag is quite damp.

I've heard drumming snipe on a couple of occasions in the peak, near High Bradfield, and once was lucky enough to see one perched on a fence post just a few feet from me.
