Can the hive mind of UKC tell me what this caterpillar is? It was a large beastie...

Looks like an Elephant Hawk Moth to me.

Thanks very much, that's very helpful. It was elephantine compared to the normal caterpillars you see.

Aren't they just! Had me scrambling for the phone to grab a picture before wondering whether I should be worried. This is behaviour that may not serve me so well next month in the hills east of Seattle...

I found one of those in my garden last year. I'd never seen nor heard of them before. Absolutely stunning beastie.
