Hi,

I'm hoping to spend 4 months climbing in the States next year. However, insurance is proving expensive... Best quote so far is 'SportsCover', coming in at ~£1300. BMC wont cover USA for more than 45 days.

Has anyone done a trip like this? Any tips?

Thanks,

Will you be climbing all the way through or in bursts with more general travelling in between? We found that we were better off with general travel insurance and then paying for top up cover for the spells where we needed extended cover. I can't remember what the breakeven point was in terms of days on rock.

Thanks for the reply -I might look into that, but the plan will be to climb most of the time. Who were you insured with?

Our main insurance was through Nationwide, "free" as part of my OH's credit card. I think our top ups were Sports Cover Direct.

We definitely got some full trip quotes significantly lower than £1300 to cover our 5 1/2 months, I think the lowest was about £750. I'll try and dig them out, they involved a lot of emailing and negotiating on terms.
