Ok, so if you have set Whatsapp notifications to "alerts" such that a received message appears in full on your screen even if the Whatsapp app is not open, does that message then show up as "read" to the sender? Or, does it only show as "read" to sender when you read it in the opened Whatsapp app?

FYI, I can't find it now, but I discovered a setting which basically said "Let Facebook personalise adverts based on your messages". How this can be the case with end-to-end encryption I don't know, but I turned it off, and now can't find the setting to check it's still off.

I saw facebook were looking in to and testing end to end, but didn't think it was anything other than an opt in. Last I can find on google is that much, from July.
