Easiest and quickest way to either the Loch Avon basin or Sputan is to walk in from the Cairn Gorm ski road, rather than approach from the south. If you have no choice but to come in from Deeside, keen and fit MTBers do occasionally ride up the Derry and past the Hutchison hut to the plateau, but the easy cycling ends about 1.5 miles short of the hut and the walk from there to either the Shelter Stone or Sputan would take almost as long as the walk from the ski road.
