Hi
Hoping to get a definitive answer to this, I was told by someone that due to my passport expiring next February 2017 I would not be allowed to travel with it to Fontainebleau in October because it's less than 6 months before it runs out, is this true

Thanks.

Roughly five seconds on Google gives this https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/france/entry-requirements

Passport needs to be valid for duration of stay.

Excellent thank you for that

In reply to riff156:

For other countries you may need up to 6 months of validity left on your passport.

Someone is getting confused. It's fine for France as long as it doesn't run out before you get back.

If it suits you to renew when you get back instead of February, they will add on the extra months to your new passport (up to 9 months) which might be useful if you want to go anywhere else that does have funny rules about having extra time on it.

The worst that can happen is that in some countries the Immigration officer might use it as a reason to extract some Dollars from you.

Maybe worse is that airlines will refuse you boarding for a flight to a country which asks for 6 or more months validity left on your passport.

I seem to remember you need 6 + months passport validity to be able to obtain an ESTA for entry to the US.

I came back from France not too many years ago without my passport - my photo driving license was enough to keep them happy.

The airline might find it sufficient if you have an open return ticket. In case you are refused entry, they will put you on the next flight back. Meanwhile you will be put in custody, possibly accompanied by an armed guard.

It is very unlikely that airlines will accept an open return ticket, because if they fly you to a country which requires at least 6 months left on a passport, they face a fine (and also the cost and trouble of flying you back as you said).

Okay, I realise it is a bit off topic, but here is my story: Years ago I went to India on a six months tourist visa valid for three reentries which I got extended for three months more when I needed that. After seven months I had to escort a friend from Bombay to Denmark as he had become seriously ill. I delivered him to his family and proper medical care and then returned to India. When I arrived back in Bombay Airport the immigration officer(s) told me that my visa was not valid for reentry after all (it was written in hindi), and that I had to take the first flight out of India. To make things a bit melodramatic, and to prevent me entering illegally, I was escorted by a policeman armed with a submachine gun while I sorted my onward journey. As it turned out the first flight out of India was going to Hongkong, and the airline company would sell me a ticket only if it was an open return ticket as I had no visa. Everything went ok (under the circumstances) and when in Hongkong, I got a tourist visa without any troubles and was able to change the return ticket to another destination, Bangkok which was on my originally planned itinerary.

Not off topic to me, and that's a good and interesting story, thanks for that!

That's great that you were able to reach Bangkok.
