To get the greatest take-up they should try to get manufacturers to turn the door handles around so the hinge of the opening mechanism is on the forward edge rather than on the rear edge. Then it might actually be easier to open the door this way.

Or better design doors that can't be opened when something is approaching from that side.... simply a few parking sensors wired into the release mech should do it
