It collapsed after overzealous drilling to insert a descent belay in 1978. It was lovingly rebuilt over the next 3 years following a successful appeal for funds. Drilling for subsequent belays is strictly forbidden as the current needle is a hollow fibreglass replica with a thin veneer of actual rock bonded with a (then) innovative resin now, ironically, used extensively to fix bolts on modern limestone sport routes
