Am driving through Germany en route to the Dolomites. Am on my own so limited to bouldering, unless there's anyone nearby that fancies some sport in the next couple of days?

Am looking at breaking the journey at Pfalz and then maybe Allgau as these have good bouldering from what i've read.

Does anyone know if there are any online topos for bouldering in either place? Google is being pretty useless! Or can anyone give me recommendations/directions at least? Would rather not have to buy a guidebook as only gonna be there a couple of days.

Also any tips on nice, preferably free places to stay in a van would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi,

maybe search for "Kalmit" on google. I did not find much English documentation, but this link here will give you a GPS location:

http://www.kletterdorf.de/rdb/pfalz-kalmit-felsenmeer?Itemid=133&showfo...

and here is some Info for this location:

I work in the area, but unfortunately never got around to boulder there yet. A mate bikes a lot in the area and spotted climbers before. So I guess it is not crazy hard to find a few spots.

And I found a more extensive boulder guide here:
http://www.goodgrip.info/bouldering/germany/pfalz/kalmit/pdf_topo/kalmit_to...
and here:

Enjoy the trip

Amazing that's perfect!

That would be great! Had a late start today and only got as far as Nancy, gonna head for Kalmit tomorrow, so now have a night in an Aire with good 3g reception to do some research, whereas yesterday I was waving my phone around trying to get a signal. Took me about 20mins just to post the first message!
Still all the help I can get is much appreciated. My German is nicht so gut and these topos always seem to be hidden away!

Cheers

I translated the approach for you using one of the links I posted. Hope that helps a bit.

Leave motorway A65 at the exist "Edenkoben". Don't stop for wine just yet, although you a driving through "Riesling-county".

At the end of the motorway exit turn right.
Go straight across the first round about (ideally not literally )
Turn right on the second round about (1st exist)
Carry on straight until you reach a round about at an "Aral" petrol station. Turn left here into the village of Maikammer.
Drive through the town and look out for small brown signs with white font "Kalmit"
The road leaves the town and climbs in serpentines up the hill.

There is a car park in the forest near the top. Park here and walk southward. The footpath (should be a proper one as it is one of the main hiking path up there).

The path basically snakes through the "Felsenmeer" =sea of rocks. So I'm sure you will see boulders.

Please note that it is local tradition to climb without chalk to preserve the rock.

Too bad I have to work

I think if you look at some of the pictures in the pdfs I linked, you will have no issues to find the place. Ideally download beforehand as you may not have signal in the woods.

There's a fair bit of Allgäu information on the guidebook authors' website. Maps & general area descriptions, although you have to buy the book to get actual topos

Nice one cheers!

Hinterstein seems like the ideal place to check out without a topo. Make a nice change from sandstone too! Although the weather forecast is for it to drop down to freezing in a couple of days, so I maybe I'm a bit late for bouldering.

The whole area looks really cool though, may end up just spending a couple of days doing some high-ish level walks if climbing is out of the question

It snowed down to 1500m at Herzogstand last night, but earlier this week it was 13 degrees at the same place.
Useful webcams for the Allgau?

Cheers for all the info guys!

Had a nice afternoon at Kalmit yesterday and a lovely night in the car park at the top. Really cool spot and interesting problems. Highly recommended!

Tried to find a good place to park up between Kempton and Sonthofen today with not much luck. Kept saying "i'll just drive a little further" and before I knew it I was in Fussen! Oops. Might go back tomorrow if it's a really glorious day but otherwise i'm getting a bit over excited about the mountains and might have to go for an explore up there instead!

Lots more snow there now, even down to the low hills on the plain. Dunno if it still happens, but there's a Mammut factory shop sale somewhere near Memmingen every November. Truly cheap gear there if you've not missed it.

Mammoth Basecamp 1

Goggle 'lager verkauf' I think.

Aww man I saw the factory when I was driving past as well!
Oh well, I don't actually need anything just now so probably good for the bank account really.
