I've always suffered badly with cold hands. I now wear 3mm dive gloves and they usually get me by.

I've thought about cryogenic gloves. Good to minus 120- 150 degrees C.

Would they work??

Thoughts please

If you died in a climbing accident they would preserve your hands until medical science advanced sufficiently to revive them. Not sure about the rest of you though.

I'd imagine the cryo gloves would not be waterproof -at those extreme temps they don't need to be. Also, (and this is from limited experience handling liquid nitrogen etc) they aren't designed for you to be immersed in the mega cold stuff, just to protect you from splashes (I expect). So being at mega cold 'outdoor' temps they might not be great.

Also dexterity? -They'll be OK for manhandling tongs etc but not necessarily fiddly climbing things..

No, it's a variant of 'golfers'. Like 'dwarves' and 'dwarfs'.

No. Golves are a warm winter clothing item you were on your hands.

Problem sloved

Edit, spelling of "were" for "wear" was not deliberate!

No way, it's like throwing hot dogs to wolves or fish to penguins.

Signed, Abseil, pendant

Oh here we go! This year's first winter glove thread and November has barely started.

Currently messing with the cheap freezer gloves and a pair of mock-leather work gloves that were supposed to be for summer ropework but are pretty windproof, hold little water and I can fit a pair of polyprop liners underneath.

The freezer gloves are in your local industrial supply shop for a fiver. Yes, they work, but if you have to take them off and put them on again in wet conditions they can be a pest.

My ancient North Cape kevlar mitts are always there as backup. They just keep on going.

'Old but Keen' at 48? yeah. Right!

I still swear by my Dachstein mitts over manmade kit. Although I use both.

I use a couple of pairs for most Scottish days.Sealskin for the walk in,comfy, warm enough, keep hands dry with no need to take of to adjust or sort out straps etc.
For the climb Black diamond punisher, using this combo last few seasons and seems to work for me.Find BD gloves to warm for the approaches.

If only walking then the sealskins do the job for the day.

make sure your wrists are warm. some people figure out overlapping woolen things which a shell.glove goes over.

if you have a spare afternoon in Inverness go to highland industrial supplies they do very good value v cheap "ice gloves" leather and insulated. buy 3 pairs massage them all liberally with snow seal or nikwax. swap when saturated. warmer than neoprene.

No. Think oven gloves with a little membrane that prevents liquid nitrogen splashing on your hands from soaking through, and a large mesh like outer surface that lets the N2 evaporate quickly. Otherwise not much by way of insulation.

I can´t be arsed using such gloves when working with liquid N2, as I prefer keeping my dexterity and minimizing the chance of a spill. They are useful, though, when taking metal racks from -80C freezers, especially when the racks and boxes are covered in ice from condensation.

Climbing in such gloves, no way.
