Good question; I'm not sure which is the best.

There's this, from an afternoon with astonishing conditions on the edge of the Mendips a week ago (there are a few others from then too). https://www.flickr.com/photos/8411024@N08/31373017365/in/dateposted-public/

Tough choice, but at the moment it's this one, worth the half hour drive to get on top of the Long Mynd and frozen hands while I waited for the sun to drop.

Hmm tricky. I had a trip to Lofoten in Jan/Feb, so lots to choose from.
This one captures the light quite well...

... but I like this one too...

But from a more climbing perspective, this one makes me want to go back there and explore...

I haven't done a whole lot of photography this year so not a huge crop to choose from.

I like this one from a really dreich day out on Creise a couple of weeks ago, not because it is a great photo, but it is very evocative of what the day was like: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mercury81/30637076523/in/photostream/lightbox...

I also quite like this from Finnich Glen, although I think I could do a better job if I go back with a tripod and an ND filter...

Nice shot, I keep meaning to go there. A chap I follow on Flickr has a great shot which apparently only occurs once a year, when the light is low enough to stream in from the front of the glen, creating a great image. I'll try and find a link.

Thanks! I had heard rumours that there was such a shot but I don't know when or where. The glen is not far from where I l iive - it is a great little place!

Despite some amazing weather while in the Chalten massif, one of my favourites from the trip was actually this shot of a moody Cumbre Central in Torres del Paine after a summer snow storm:

My fav climbing shot of the year however is our high point while off route on West Buttress of Beinn Eighe, Torridon:

Crop harder! On the white bird, lose the dirty neck and all the distracting elements in the background, and you are left with a cleaner (!) composition that emphasises that amazing eye. The kingfisher is amazing, great lighting and background and a nice catchlight in the eye. Losing half a cm off the right would get rid of that bright bit on the stick.

In reply to Fredt:
Kingfisher - great shot!

I'd try some tighter crop options, add a smidgen of vignette and perhaps a bit of selective dodge to lift the bird a bit (or burn the background).

I'm not sold on the kingfisher. It's just too typical. It's a great shot to be sure but it isn't special apart from being a well executed shot of a good subject.

The other one is a bit flawed but the subject is far more interesting. It is a picture of a bird that is actually going about the business of being a bird, not just sitting and looking pretty. It is gritty and real. It probably wouldn't be a default desktop background on a Windows PC or Mac but that's rather why I like it.

I would love to see a bit more space on the left (and a bit above) of the second image - in the direction the bird is looking. A bit of tactical blurring or vignette to disguise the fact that the grass strands are leaving the frame would help, too, because they currently draw the eye away from the subject. I wouldn't touch the saturation at all but possibly pulling the luminosity of blue down a bit (except around the eye) to darken the background would help. Pushing the brightness of the image up, overall, would also help.

definitely KF, however Id try and edit it to elevate the detail in the eye a little, just a tad too dark for my liking, that said, ive never managed to take a photo that clear of a KF so good stuff that man

Another vote for the gannet.......... I just like gannets, probably because I can watch them while belaying in my favourite places . The grass in its beak adds something. Though I would crop it more heavily.

Lovely shot, it's almost infrared in appearance.

Mine is probably this one which was taken on a cracking ride with some friends in January. We set out in perfect, dry conditions, got to the furthest point on our route where stopped for coffee and came out to winter. Great fun, despite twice coming off my bike on the return leg!

Doubt that many people have seen one, let alone taken a picture of one, so hardly 'typical'!

That's a superb album of your trip, are they all taken with your 300D? I think this this one is actually my favourite:

 Marek 16 Dec 2016
In reply to Fraser:

300D? No, that venerable body has been converted for 'full spectrum' use. I've had a 550D for a while (wow!), but for the Lofoten trip I rented a Canon EF 70-200 F2.8 IS lens to help with the low light whales shots. Surprisingly, more were taken at the short end of the lens focal range than at the long end. I had underestimated (a) how big whales are and (b) how close they get. I wasn't the only one - it was interesting to see other people trying to swap (expensive) lenses (and memory cards) on a pitching boat under constant spray whilst wearing thick gloves.

Very moody. I was up there for a week in October and actually went up Lingmoor Fell, but it literally never stopped raining the whole week. I mean continuously with the mist down to the trees. You are so lucky.
