They have another rope. It is in the car.

I can't UKC sensors it!

The thing I really like about this shot is the perfect straight line of the rope and the way it highlights the massive run-out. So often the presence of a rope makes it look safer and less scary, but here it just highlights the need but offers no benefit as it disappears down below and doesn't look much use higher up.

In reply to erictant:

I'm not sure the run out is quite that massive. The exaggeration of distance from the ultra wide angle lens can be seen by comparing the size of the climber's hand and foot

He may also have been shunting a large friend up with him, or have another rope running through gear deep in the crack. Very good photo anyway. Some others on that link are even better.

Or it could be a haul line?
 Tom Last 01 Jan 2017
In reply to JJL:

Looks like a haul line with the rope attached to back of harness.

Maybe he's soloing!

In reply to JJL:

Yes, it looks to me like he's soloing and that rope is for an emergency bail

bloody hell!

If there is another rope I can't think where it would be. I guess he could be seconding (with the rope not visible in the dark chimney above) with another line clipped on as an easier way of carrying it.
