Can you charge a Canon 400Ds battery off a solar panel? What bits do you need?

I'm not a Canon user, but it will be possible. You'll need a big panel charging a big battery with an inverter to output AC to your charger. Some cameras (Sony) charge via USB, so you can get away with a much smaller setup.

For most cameras and most trips, taking several spare batteries will be cheaper, lighter and smaller.

I agree with Adam, unless you're going off grid for weeks, you're better off with spare batteries. In my experience (LP-E6s) the Canon own brand ones are significantly better than the 3rd party ones at holding their charge, especially when it's cold.
