x Premier Post - Bouldering with Ben Moon in Fontainebleau, 28 March-4 April 2004

x by - Jacqui Sread on - 11 Feb 2004 - host217-44-173-69.range217-44.btcentralplus.com
Ben Moon knows Fontainebleau's bouldering circuits intimately, and with small groups 1:5 ratio, Ben will work closely with individuals sharing his expertise and secrets to success and motivating individuals to get the best out of their training. His relaxed easy manner and infectious enthusiasm will make this course challenging but fun.

Chris Swain, a leading yoga teacher and oesteopath with over 20 years experience in bodywork, will work with Ben to show you how to increase your power, stamina and flexibility. In keeping with Ben's approach to climbing, Chris will be teaching breathing and visualisation techniques, and showing how an integrated mind and body approach can make the difference to success.

This course is designed for people climbing 5+ french (HVS English, 5.8 USA).

Is this the relaxed easy manner he shows on the bouldering videos, or a different relaxed easy manner.

Seriously though, sounds interesting. How much?

In reply to Fiend: look at the web site... £800

No wonder they didn't mention it...

800 quid! Holy cow! you could buy a car for that, or fly to America/New Zealand(Castle Hill)!

Has the world gone mad?! What would Whillans say?!

wonder how much footy fans would pay for a kickaround with beckham over 7 days?
x by - not a cheapskate on - 17 Feb 2004 - 194.75.129.2 whois?
Approx 110 pounds a day to climb with a world class boulderer. Not exactly expensive is it?
x by - Anonymous on - 17 Feb 2004 - anon.proxify.com
In reply to not a cheapskate:

of course its expensive - go to font you can climb with world class climbers all you want for f*ck all.
x by - Beast on - 17 Feb 2004 - unallocated.star.net.uk
In reply to Billy De Kid:

Why would anyone spend £800 on this when they can spend c£450 (ok more like £550 with travel) on the planetfear font trip?? World class climbers and far less pricy!
x by - sloper on - 18 Feb 2004 - 193.119.54.2 whois?
In reply to Beast: Why anyone would pay for coaching at font when the locals will show you the moves (can't remember the chaps name, the one with the odd jaw) and demonstrate real techinque for free is beyond me anyway.

In reply to sloper:
I agree Jacky Goddoffe(SP), Joe Montchause(SP) et al spotted and gave us tips when we were there. Ben is truly a great climber but I personally would rather a coaching session on grit from him (it'd probably be cheaper too).
Saying that I bet you would get a lot out of it but for £800 I'd wanna be cranking font 8a by the end of the week (unlikely to say the least).
:D
x by - RobinWar on - 19 Feb 2004 - raptor.warwickshire.gov.uk
In reply to Jacqui Sread: £800. That's £100 to get to Font, £100 for a bed £200 for Ben's beer money and, judging by the website, £400 ponce tax.
x by - Iesu Grist on - 20 Feb 2004 - host217-42-157-199.range217-42.btcentralplus.com
In reply to Jacqui Sread:

You truly would have to be a stupid rich bastard to pay for this.

I'm sure Ben will have a wail of a time with such a bunch of weirdos.

Ben is nowhere near Beckam's status. Granted he's an amazing climber, but at the end of the day if you climb outside enough, you'll probably end up meeting him and many of his ilk out at the crag.

If you're rich enough to pay £800 quid for it, why not contact him via benmoon.co.uk and organise a coaching session with him yourself, one to one?

Oh right yeah, I guess you'll need that dude teaching you how to breathe eh?

In reply to Iesu Grist: £800!!??!!
I've never paid more than £250 per trip to font in the 8 years I've been going (including gite travel petrol food beer etc) DIY and spend the other £550 on two more trips - bound to get much better that way!

In reply to Anonymous:
And for the girlies - a few days crancking in the peak with Airlie Anderson - a snip at £375

are these prices P/Person?

For £800 I'd want Ben Moon to personally squeak my boots, cook my breakfast, wipe my bottom and tuck me up in my sleeping-bag at night.

In reply to Iesu Grist: If Whillans were around I'd pay 800 quid to climb with him. Perhaps he could help me out with Goliath :)
x by - Dom Orsler on - 23 Feb 2004 - samsmanager.sams.ucalgary.ca
In reply to Jacqui Sread:

So, that's a 5:1 ratio at 800 quid each? That's 4,000 for the group. It's a one week course, right? That works out at a rate of over 200K/year. I know they won't be running fifty week long courses with five people in each, but come on! It's not like they're hiring stadium time! This is climbing, for f*ck's sake, FREE, on FREE rocks, in FREE woods.

200k/year...! Ben is good, and all, and I truly appreciate his contribution to climbing, but you'd have to be insane to book yourself up on this. If anyone knows of anyone who goes for this, please publically lambast them on this forum. It would be merciless and fun.

In reply to Jacqui Sread:

I also note Jerry's quoted on this site as saying;

"I have red-pointed nearly all of my hardest routes first go".

What the f*ck does that mean? Onsight? I can't think of any sport routes over 8b that he 'redpointed first go', or onsighted.

Also, I don't think travel is included in this little sejourn. That means you're looking at a total cost of about a grand! Now we're talking Marlin fishing in the Florida Keys!
x by - RobinWar on - 23 Feb 2004 - 82-32-16-72.cable.ubr03.azte.blueyonder.co.uk
In reply to Jacqui Sread:

That ups the ponce tax to £500.

Maybe a gold-plated pof ball is included?

In reply to RobinWar:

A bit silly to moan about the price of any unique product. Until you know what the market will bear, who knows what it's worth?

After all, some ridiculous self-rescue course is apparently worth £200 for 2 days, hence £500 for 5 days. I know which I think is better value, and it isn't stuff you can read in a book.

Pity we don't get feedback threads to tell us what the take-up was!
x by - Dom Orsler on - 24 Feb 2004 - samsmanager.sams.ucalgary.ca
In reply to johncoxmysteriously1:

That's a silly thing to say. So how about they charged 120,000 quid for the week? Would it still be a bit silly to 'moan' about the price, given the product described? It's just a question of degrees, and I, like pretty much everyone else posting in response to this product, think the price is ridiculous. Not just 'a bit much', but at least twice as much as should be being charged.
x by - johncoxmysteriously1 on - 24 Feb 2004 - demon-gw.dewarhogan.co.uk
In reply to Dom Orsler:

Mmmyesss. I see your point, a bit. But it isn't a question of what should be being charged, is it? It's a question of what people are prepared to pay to get that close to a celebrity. Like you, I have my doubts whether it will sell, but the proof's in the pudding.

And I see that in fact this is for a week, not five days. So you get to pay about the same per day as for a course on self-rescue given by nonentities, in fact perhaps less, allowing for food and accommodation. Do you think £200 for a two-day course on self-rescue is equally poor value?
x by - Dom Orsler on - 24 Feb 2004 - samsmanager.sams.ucalgary.ca
In reply to johncoxmysteriously1:

Fair enough, but a shorter course will, proportionally, cost more, because a similar amount of logistical overhead is involved whether it's a ten or two day course.

And yes, I think the self-rescue course is also overpriced.
