For doing snow plod type routes in the alps are special sunglasses essential to prevent snowblindness or can you make do with ordinary cheapo shades?

As long as they block uv you should be ok, wraparounds and glacier glasses are better though.

In reply to samfox: You can but your eyes probably won't appreciate it!

You don't need specific glacier glasses, but wrap-around sun-glasses are a must. You can get them fairly cheap. Make sure they block out UV A and B, most should is bought from a reputable retailer.

Good sun glasses are essential. Check out the Uv ratings, depends on your budget really. Also get very high factor sun cream and re-apply when you can. (obviously only on any skin showing!!)

Biggest problem we had was drinking enough

Ones suitable for skiing should be fine.

In reply to GrahamD: use cat 3 as a minimum, you wont notice any damage to your eyes, but it will hve happened....and over time it all adds up.
