The term 'Alpinist' often conjures up images of superhuman climbers making daring ascents on wild mountain faces. The truth is anyone can be an alpinist and moving safely and efficiently in such an extreme and beautiful environment is one of the most satisfying experiences that climbing has to offer.

What's included in Chamonix Mountaineering Courses With Action Outdoors:

  • An IFMGA Mountain Guide for 5 days – All our guides have a good level of English
  • 6 night's accommodation - In a purpose built centre right in the heart of town.
  • Full board – All you can eat breakfast, packed lunch, afternoon tea and 3 course evening buffet. It certainly beats pasta on a camping stove after a long day on the hill!
  • Equipment hire – All technical equipment is available (boots, crampons, axes etc.). This allows you to try gear out and really understand what you need, what works and what you like before taking the plunge or to try out other manufacturers equipment if you already have your own.
  • Lift pass – Saves you walking (can do if you really want too though!) allowing you to really make the most of your time out in the mountains
  • Hut nights – At least one night in a mountain refuge, will vary depending on course and conditions

Still, becoming an alpinist can be a pretty daunting task. The leap from British mountaineering and cragging to Alpine climbing can seem huge. The grand scale of the Alps is somewhat intimidating and for good reason too. With a whole new set of risks such as crevasses, seracs, avalanches, altitude and mountain weather, a much larger skill set and knowledgebase is required to operate safely. A simple mistake in the mountains can have serious consequences and an epic is never far away.

Action Outdoors are the official UK partner of the UCPA, a not for profit French organisation dedicated to getting young people (18 – 40 years) into the outdoors. We offer a variety of Alpine mountaineering courses designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to climb safely and independently in the Alpine environment whilst ticking off some classic routes in the process. With prices starting from £529, our residential courses are the most cost effective way for mountaineers of all levels to develop their skills safely.

Chamonix is the birthplace of Alpinism. There is easy access to well over a life time's worth of world class climbing and lift access to the glaciers allowing your guide to easily choose and adapt routes depending on conditions, group level and course goals. Courses are taught by qualified and experienced mountain guides chosen for their enthusiasm, local knowledge and teaching ability.

The centre is purpose built, basic but comfortable and located right in the centre of town. The accommodation has a wonderful social vibe due to UCPA's international reputation. Everyone shares a passion for the mountain environment, whether through climbing, trail running, mountain biking or alpine mountaineering. Trading war stories over a beer at the lively centre bar or one of the many local nightspots is a great way to spend the evening (if you still have the energy).

But what really makes our courses stand out from the crowd is just how much you get for your money. As UCPA is not profit driven, their focus is on offering a quality experience at a price that makes alpine climbing accessible for all. There are no hidden extras, everything except your personal insurance and transport to Chamonix, is included:

If the weather turns nasty, which it often does in the Alps, the guides local knowledge will enable you to still get the most out of your days. They are not restrained to working in Chamonix, so you may find that you get to explore more of the Alps than you signed up for too!
