The Osprey Mutant 28/38 - any route, any season...£100, added Aug/2014, see all Osprey news & reviews
announcement by Osprey
Don’t mistake this for purely a winter climbing pack however. In the summer you might be feeling the heat but you will definitely reap the benefits from the EVA die-cut ventilated shoulder harness. As well as the Mutant’s ability to strip 380g from the total pack weight by removing any features you don’t need. There is also a convenient internal hydration sleeve, compatible with Osprey’s Hydraulics™ reservoir.
Access to the pack is key and Osprey have got this nailed. The main entry to the Mutant 38 is through a floating and removable top lid, which means you can overload your pack like a packhorse or remove the lid totally for greater head clearance and lighter weight. Whilst lesser climbing packs have minimal weather protection and compression when in this mode, the Mutant 38’s performance doesn’t suffer.
You have the option to use the built-in FlapJacket™ that not only provides a weatherproof closure; but keeps your gear fully compressed. Integrated into the top pocket there' rapidly deployable mesh ski/climbing helmet storage pouch. The reverse-wrap Splitter™ hipbelt delivers your choice of comfort, minimalism or gear racking options. Thanks to its intuitive design all of these features are packed into a construction that weighs in at just 1.19Kg (M/L size in 38L volume).
Every aspect of the Mutant has been proven and tested, from Alaska to the Himalayas – it’s everything you need and nothing you don’t.
Available in Dyno Green and Gritstone Black the new Mutant also comes in 38L and 28L volumes.
