Winter 2016 sees Nikwax and Berghaus, two of the longest established British Outdoor brands, joining forces on the new Berghaus Extrem range, utilising PFC-free Nikwax Hydrophobic Down as a solution to make down exceptionally water-resistant whilst continuing their commitment to the lightest possible environmental footprint.

Down is the optimum insulation for very cold conditions, providing exceptional insulation for the absolute minimum of weight. But until recently its big drawback has been its vulnerability to water. When down gets wet it loses its ability to keep you warm. However, Nikwax Hydrophobic Down provides the optimum outdoor insulation solution – water-resistance, low weight and high insulation, without the use of hazardous persistent chemicals.

  • You can shake Nikwax Hydrophobic Down in water for 1000 minutes and it still will not sink.
  • You can clean items with Nikwax Down Wash Direct to maintain its water-resistant and insulation properties.
  • Combine this performance with excellent Berghaus clothing design and you have an elite product.

The Berghaus Extrem range with Nikwax Hydrophobic Down (branded as HydroDown™) features the Ramche 2.0 Jacket for men and the Extrem Micro Down for women.

Men’s Berghaus Ramche Down 2.0 Jacket is a new standard in mountaineering down. It uses Berghaus' pioneering Hydrodown® - powered by Nikwax - now powered by Nikwax - with Reflect™ aluminium mesh sewn into the core body areas to provide up to 10% greater thermal efficiency. Taking a tip from alpine sleeping bag design, the offset baffle construction eliminates cold spots along seam lines, ensuring a consistent barrier of warm down around your body. Body-mapped stitch-through side panels help to regulate body temperature without excess bulk, and the performance tailoring throughout allows for unhindered body movement while you're climbing and belaying. Weight: 452g. SRP: £350.

Women’s Extrem Micro Down Jacket is a lightweight jacket that also features water-resistant HydroDown™ insulation powered by Nikwax providing the ultimate warmth that will keep on working even when it’s wet. The new PERTEX QUANTUM CS10 outer fabric is extremely lightweight yet tough enough to stand its ground on any harsh route. Body-mapping design techniques help regulate your temperature and put warmth where it's really needed, while stitch-through baffles reduce bulk. Designed specifically with female alpinists in mind, this jacket has a flattering silhouette, streamlined design and tons of useful features, including a helmet-compatible hood with wired peak for added protection. Weight (approx.): 390g. SRP: £190.

Nick Brown, CEO of Nikwax said “I am delighted to be working with Berghaus on this project. This is a great step on the road to showing that the best available technology can also be the most sustainable technology, and moving PFC products out of the outdoor market.

Paul Cosgrove, Extrem Category Manager at Berghaus said “Berghaus and Nikwax are leaders in providing innovative, efficient and sustainable technical solutions to outdoor problems. We are extremely pleased with this fantastic development in performance down insulation and are delighted to be working with Nikwax on this industry leading initiative.

Nikwax has pioneered the move away from polluting PFC water repellents and continues to demonstrate that high performance waterproofing can be achieved with minimum environmental effect.
