I think it was Johnny Ireland that gave him the name. With his mop of blond hair and rustic face he thought he looked like a cream bun.

Great shot and instantly recognisable even now. Alan was my assessor, then mentor, then friend in the late 80s and early 90s. He and Fi and family came and stayed with us in the Alps for two seasons. He did the Walker in 91, something he'd wanted to do for years. Seemed like after that, that sailing took over...

Thanks Jon - Bun and I go back a long way, to 1961 in fact. We started climbing together when I was instructing in Ogwen and Al was working in forestry. I was climbing at my best that year and we did many of the hard routes on offer at the time, the most memorable being an early ascent of Vector.

I remember Dave Walsh telling about walking up to the Cromlech - not quite sure of the date, but early on - to do the corner. Standing at the foot of Left Wall, about to climb it, was 'a blond god'. This was Dave's first meeting with Al. Were you there on that occasion?

Hello Jon - it could not have been me as I never did Left Wall, except for the part of it that you do on the girdle traverse. I did Cenotaph with Al in '62 but I have no recollection of him doing Left Wall - but then it was a long time ago !

Well well, what a blast from the past Boje. I did do Left Wall with Dave Yates in 62 or 3 and it was a long time ago. Good pic of you on Shrike, I was the belayer! I'm still struggling to make the grade.

You've got me there Bun - I'm a total blank on that one. However, I can turn the tables a bit by pointing out that on that ascent of Shrike I was with Tony Bennet ! I will E-Mail you in the next couple of days.

Alan, fancy meeting you here. Hope you didn't mind Walshie's quote! Monty.
