As I recall the Plymouth ethic back then was 3 falls and then you handed the lead over to your mate (Ken Palmer got the first ascent). Before this successful ascent Nick White, ever hungry for first ascents, asked if it had been been done yet. He was told that it had - hence the name.

I believe the holds were all carefully chalked before the succesful ascent - adding more whiteness to the lie!
