Do axes penetrate chalk like they do on ice?
jon - 11/Dec/12
With these bolted chalk routes you are actually climbing on existing placements set during the FA so it is more like dry tooling. New holds shouldn't be made as it lowers the grade. This doesn't apply at the non-bolted venues such as Dover. At Dover the chalk is often quite easy to penetrate with axes low down but higher up the chalk is usually harder and comparible to hard black ice. It usually takes half a dozen swings to chip a hold deep enough so quite exhausting. Ice feels easy in comparison!
