Interesting times....our Don annoying the continentals on Everest, apparently hogging the lead and the French storming off complaining of Anglo Saxon conspiracy. Mr Farage would have loved him. Reinhold Messner was interviewed and didn't think his achievements amounted to much!!....' History really finished in the Alps in the fifties'
The editorial board of Mountain were coming under increasing criticism for being more concerned with 'city values' and commercialism and generally neglecting British climbing.
Oh and the continentals in the guise of Carlo Maestri had just bolted their way up Cerro Torre's head wall....

One of the best editions of Mountain ever. 'On the Profundity Trail' by Doug Scott and a wonderfully elegiac piece on West Penwith by Frank Cannings - gave me inspiration and motivation that has lasted (more or less) to this day.
