Overview

38 top-ropes on 10-12 m (approx) vertical walls with bolt-on holds. Three of these have moderate roofs, and another three are backward-sloping. Each rope has two or three colour-coded routes.

4 rope positions on new Livingstone panel walls, with a combination of features and bolt-on holds. Bolts (but not extenders) are provided here. 13 rope positions on 13m+ featured panel lead walls, overhanging to 4m, by DR, bolted complete with extenders. Curved resin Livingstone bouldering wall, approx 3 m high, with permanent mats. Cellar board. Shop (recently extended) and cafe. Toilets and changing area upstairs.

750 sq m of wall surface, and more in the pipeline. Shop and cafe. Courses and gear hire.

[11/02] New lead wall and slab. Also new seating area. Largest climbing shop in the North

Plus points - Very pleasant venue (formerly a church), friendly staff and atmosphere; "rules" seek to limit climbs per rope at such periods; evidently a thriving centre, with on-going development. Sign-in procedure requires a declaration of basic competence by the climber. Increasingly popular as a meeting place for people from the newsgroup uk.rec.climbing. Minus points - Limited parking; route identification/grade listing could be better and more frequent; can be crowded, esp. early evenings. [Steve Pardoe 11/98]

Very clear route identification - better than the Rope Race in Marple and the Edge or Foundry in Sheffield). [Mike Rignall 01/00]

Car parking improved in 2003 [Steve Parish 09/04]

I would just like to say that today was my first ever experience of rock climbing of any sort. I was taken here with my girlfriend (also a newbie) by friends with experience and to say we enjoyed ourselves is an understatement! We both loved every minute and are keen to go again soon! Very friendly staff and members and we are now hooked! Although very tired!!!!!!

Pretty good. Bouldering and leading all great. though top-roping no harder than F6b. Downside - expensive, costs £7.
