300m, 6 pitches. East side of Mescalito

abeckman 20/Oct AltLd dnf

Led 1/2 and 4. A-A-P-A-P. Skipped last two pitches due to time/weather. 3rd pitch involves 5.5 boulder move, but is otherwise a ledge. Single 70m rope. The 4th (or 5th) pitch involves a rap down to a ledge 20 feet above the previous belay with a scramble down to it.

MP. Good multi pitch climb. Lead Pitch 1 and 4. Start of pitch 4 is hard for the grade. Abbed off at top of pitch 4 due to strong wind.

What a day. First on the route. C led pitch 1 (5.5 in the guide, felt like 5.6/7). I did the easier but still good pitch 2. C led pitch 3 (5.6 but felt 5.7). Then I led pitches 4/5 in one, taking the 5.6R option - though the climbing on the link sectrion was neither 5.6 (maybe 5.5 at a pinch) nor R (well protected). The crack was a joy, then the delicate run-out finish took me a while to pluck up courage - surely 5.6/7 R? The 4th class scramble then took an age, as we took a wrong turn and ended up on rubble-strewn ledges before retreating and finding a way further right. I fled the final 5.7 chimney pitch, brilliant stuff (despite a brief wrong turn which led into unprotectable territory). Getting to the summit then took longer than expected - "a short scramble" in the guide, but actually quite long and again with non-obvious route-finding. We meant to take the "hikers" route off, but by the time we got to the notch the light was fading and we couldn't see a way up the next summit. Almost resigned to a forced bivvy (and associated massive fine for missing the late entry time from the park), we picked up a line of cairns down the north side, leading to a gully down which we scrambled, with 2 long scary abseils (by now in pitch dark), not knowing if our 50m ropes were long enough (they were, just!), to reach the main creek. Another longer-than-expected scramble out through the massive boulders finally led to the car 17 minutes after our late entry permit expired, but luckily no ticket. An epic day, absolutely brilliant.
