the left hand start takes a smaller gully left of the parent route and leads directly into the uper fault. this is usually harder but may also contain ice in quantity and give a very good pitch when formed. very occaisionally an icefall flows directly down the smooth wall from the upper gully, giving 8m of near vertical ice.
