From the Momella gate the approach walk takes you through lush forest with abundant wildlife ascending 1000m to the Miriakamba Huts at 2500m (overnight). The near 2000m Volcanic headwall (partial remains of a huge crater rim) rises impressively near these huts, and the crater floor is a short walk from here. The ascent then progresses more steeply through thinning vegetation to the Saddle huts at 3500m (overnight), which are situated in a Col between the main summit ridge and the subsidary peak of Little Meru (3800m). An early start is advised for the lengthy ridge approach to the summit which is somewhat exposed in sections and involves simple scrambling (British grade 1). Many interesting Lava formations are passed and a final scramble attains the airy 4562m summit marked by a metal Tanzanian flag. With good visibility fantastic views across the plains to Kilimanjaro can be enjoyed, and the ascent of Meru is certainly good acclimatization for anyone considering tackling Africa's highpoint. Meru is certainly more technically and aesthetically interesting than the standard routes on Kilimanjaro, well worth a look!
