Smoking the White Owl** III 4
[Last Pitch-smoking the white owl, 2 kb]250m, 5 pitches. A fairly long water ice route up the frozen stepped walls of the Allt nah-Aire waterfall. The final steep 50m pitch is the crux. The route can be up to 400 m long, but often best started a little higher up where the ice is steeper and better.

A fun route and great to get something done given the forecast. It's all about the last pitch and it didn't disappoint - a superb lead by Debs!

First winter route. Last pitch was great fun. Descended by mtb trail under gondola as darkness approached.

Superb last pitch, sustained if bulges taken direct.

A day of work. The route was reasonably sheltered given the 90mph+ winds up high, and the ice was in good condition. Descended via the diagonal ramp about 75m east of route.
Ken Applegate - Lead - 22/Mar/13 with Justin

Thin down below and a little damp. Fun climbing with plenty of cauliflower ice. Protection was hard to find but Bill did a great job.
Freddie 1 - 2nd O/S - 21/Dec/10 with Bill Strachan

Bit soft lower down but I got the last pitch which was steep & well frozen. Excellent.
KeithW - AltLd O/S - 20/Dec/10 with Si Lambert

Awesome climbing in beautiful setting. Done in lean condition and the ice was quite crusty. Found it harder than Peter Pan Direct (V,5) which we did the day before.

First pitch was still a bit of a waterfall so we walked round it. Rest was good though. Crux at top pitch as per guidebook.
JdotP - AltLd O/S - 05/Dec/10 with Nicholas Dominelli Whiteley

Almost in condition - a bit wet in places. Fantastic climbing, particularly last two pitches, which were made a bit spicier by G taking the route off to the right. Temperature inversion. Lovely day. Gondola back down to car park :)
sophiecb - 2nd - 05/Dec/10 with George McEwen

Avoided first pitch as wet/ poorley formed. Good ice higher up
Nic DW - AltLd O/S - 05/Dec/10 with John P

Soloed up to the bottom of the top steep pitch in the dark.

It was wet - steep and falling off the rock. Possibly the last ascent this year but Alan will confirm that. He graded it at 4 due to the fact that the thing was falling down as we climbed.....

Took a steeper & wetter line on the right hand side of the crux due to queues, this made it grade IV for the final pitch.

Excellent climb, started in the lower gorge by the fence line and soloed up until the first steep pitch. Topped out on a very windy Sgurr Finnisg-aig. Split the last pitch with Gwilym.
