Parked car at designated area near Sailfoot (before Fish Farm areas at Selcoth). Followed the well defined track up to Selcoth as usual but had to divert from usual route because of shooters. Arriving on open hillside, followed rough path which eventually converged with boundary dyke and fence. Followed fence up to summit of Croft Head. It was misty towards the summit and we again went beyond it to where the Southern Upland Way can be joined. We descended by a route taking us above the Selcoth Burn before descending by the way we came up in order to avoid the shooters. The actual walking time was 2 hours, 31 minutes. Accompanied by Bill Harley.

Began at Over Pawhope, 08.00, with Bert & Alfie. Weather decent, cloudy and windy, worsening as day went on. Walked back to cattle grid at Shorthope and then followed the fence line up on to a decent path that went over Brockhope Rig to a cairn on Mid Rig. Broke East to Herman Law and then followed the ridge for the next four hours, to Andrewhinney Hill, Bell Craig, Mid Rig and Bodesbeck Law, following he fence all the way. Bert & Alfie left over Pot Law to head back to the bothy and I carried on. Followed the fence on to Smidhope Hill and Capel Fell. At this point I made the mistake of following the fence east straight off Capel Fell to Croft Head rather than down the other fence onto the Southern Upland Way route - because the descent was steep and the ascent up Croft Heads west flank was even steeper! Plus there was a very good, steep path up the southern slope. Anyway reached the summit by 16.15. From here I descended said path and rather than head back the Upland path to Park's Well or Windfell Nick I headed straight up the steep north face of West Knowe - killer. Anyway, once up here at 17.00 I carried on to Loch Fell and followed the fence again on to Wnd Fell, which involved a drop of about 150m and from here it was on to Hopetoun Craig and finally Ettrick Pen. Headed North for a while, about 500m, before a faint single line path took me east and on to the path - just before the sheepen, where it is very faint a back to the bothy. Finished a 19.05.

Parked car at convenient car park area near Sailfoot (before Fish Farm at Selcoth). Followed a well defined track up to Selcoth and went through series of gates. Arriving on open hillside, followed rough path which eventually converged with boundary dyke and fence. Followed fence up to summit of Croft Head. We descended by the same route. In the snow, the views of the Moffat Dale were stunning. Again, Under Saddle Yoke and Saddle Yoke were particularly outstanding. Walking time 2 hours, 27 minutes. Accompanied by Bill Harley.
