Viewed from the distant Red Screes this prominent lone gully standing on the northern side of Ill Bell looks impressive, and with good snow conditions would prove to be a formidable challenge due to its steep proportions. (But not this day) Having first asked permission to park at The Queens Head Inn we crossed over the Kirkstone Pass road following the narrow lane through Town Head farm. Eventually having crossed over Ing Bridge the foot path stays level with Hagg Gill then on to Troutbeck park. It took us just over an hour to reach Bell Gully and another hour to climb up to the summit cairns of Ill Bell. We had taken a half rope some cams a pair of helmets and our climbing axes none of which was needed as this gully offered no real problems,although due to its steepness the axe did prove to be helpful in the way of a much needed pull up. From Ill Bell summit we followed the well worn path on to Froswick and turning away from Thornthwaite crag ( I had been there before) we walked back down the Scot Rake foot path (Roman road ) retracing our steps back to the Queens Head Inn for a well deserved pint. In total the journey took six hours.
