Bristly Ridge (Winter)*** II 2/3

Adjacent Climbs
<< Bristly Ridge

Square Chimney Buttress >>
200m. The classic Summer scramble is a sterner test in full Winter conditions, with some great situations on the upper pinnacles. Approach by following the wall up from the Bwlch until it abuts the ridge. Carry on steeply up the East side of the ridge until an awkward ice chimney/gully gains access to the crest. Follow the fine ridge to the plateau over some exciting pinnacles.

Just a dusting of powder and a little bit of ice in the gullies... more ice on the descent in fact.

Walked up from Ogwen cottage. Got a bit lost finding the cwm below Tryfan, and ended up going up to the south summit, and having to traverse around, in deep now! Not sure we found the right way up the ridge at the start - kept right of the wall, and had two pitches of powder-snow covered grooves, where it was hard to find a hold, although protection could be found! Easier ground above, and then found a large drop - down-climbed, and traversed around, then up, through deep, tiring, unconsolidated snow! Gained ridge in a white-out, and followed GPS (compass was playing up!) to miner's track (though the path is not quite the same as on the OS 1:25,000! Descended on the east side of Tryfan, and had a long walk back to the car at Ogwen Cottage! Felt very hard for the grade in these conditions!

Avoided some of the last parts as so not to be late for work, not in very good condition anyway. Had mini epic on variant start, good times.

Pitched the initial gully then moved together for most of the rest of the route. Lots of soft and fluffy powder but an amazing day, no wind and barely a cloud!

Hard conditions because of deep unconsolidated powder, falling snow, -6c and 45mph winds! Eyelids froze up!
