West Face Direct >>

The enduring classic of the western end of Chair Ladder provides a long and diverse expedition. Start at a corner-crack in the centre of the bulging wall left of a deep seawater filled trench.. 1) 4b, 32m. Climb the wide crack to its end and continue to an overhang above it. Pull over the overhang at a crack (easier on the right) and ascend a short, easy wall to a large ledge and belay.. 2) 4a, 20m. Pull up onto a bubbly slab on the right and climb it to the base of a corner. Climb the corner and the enticing right curving continuation to a stance at its end.. 3) 4b, 18m. Move back left and make a hard move up onto a ledge. Traverse left to gain another ledge and then step right and finish up a short slabby groove and wide crack. © ROCKFAX

I lead the first, 3rd and last pitch. The first pitch was very wet, so was quite tricky. The last pitch saw me make the most un-stylish mantle move maybe ever seen in Cornwall? Tough move for me!

disjointed, unpleasant and really not sure why it gets any fuss at all, curving crack on pitch 4 was nice but the rest was utter shite.

Led P1, P3. First pitch could be 4c if its not your style! Great pitch though and a very comfortable belay ledge to enjoy the surroundings. Got a little bit lost on the top pitch, not going far enough left, but ended up at the right final location.

I led pitches 1 and 3. First 2 pitches are fantastic, 3rd is a bit of an anticlimax (though we missed the mantelshelf as the line on the Rockfax topo is wrong, it goes up from the belay before traversing left to the ledge, instead of traversing left then mantelling).

Another great evening climb. Perfect weather, place to ourselves as usual, anyone would think Chair Ladder's not very good or something. High tide, so missed 1st pitch. Cobbled the rest together - Chester led the classic pitch, I led the rest.

Strung 1st, 2nd, and 3rd pitches together and was pretty zonked after that, but really enjoyed it. Final pitch is nothing to write home about, but the rest of the route is really worthwhile.
