Bowfell Buttress*** VI 6
[awesome summit views, 2 kb]110m, 4 pitches.

Rockfax Description
110m. One the of great classic buttress routes of the Lakes. Starts just left of the foot of the buttress below a chimney. 1) 25m. Climb an open groove then a narrow offwidth chimney to a big ledge. 2) 30m. Make a tricky move up off the ledge then move left into the open groove line until an exit back right can be made onto a good ledge below a steep crack. 3) 30m. Climb the steep crack followed by some bold moves across the slab on the left and a traverse into a steep right facing corner (possible belay). Thin moves up the corner and the chimney above lead to a stance. 4) 25m. Move either left or right and climb easier ground to the top of the buttress. © ROCKFAX

David Kay - AltLd O/S - 01/Feb/15 with Joe Dobson

Awesome! Best mixed route I've done! Felt it was more 5/6, 5, 5/6, 5 in terms of tech grades.
joe.91 - AltLd O/S - 01/Feb/15 with David Kay

Pitch 1 is never tech 4. Brilliant route though with the final pitch being the highlight for me.

Great climbing - well frozen turf and and helpful neve in places.
Jules C - AltLd - 18/Dec/10

Brilliant fun, all on the soft end of the rope (thanks Tim). Highlight was my crampon falling off on the final groove and having to do some knee climbing till it could be fixed...
Mowglee - 2nd - 05/Dec/10 with Tom Nichols, Tim

Hidden - Lead O/S - 04/Dec/10

Tried to lead the first pitch, couldn't find any reasonable gear before the initial groove so I handed the reins over to Andy. Route got harder and harder so I stayed gibbering as a second. Pitches felt something like 5, 5, 6, 6 to me but it was pretty much out of my league so difficult for me to say! Very little ice or frozen turn so it was hunting for small hooks under a thick covering of snow the whole way. We bailed from a large block very near the top as darkness, exhaustion, dehydration and the beginnings of hypothermia were sucking the fun out of the party. Got back to civilisation just in time to call off the mountain rescue callout our worried friends had put in. An incredible day!

First of this grade. Was ace. Hard work.

Meant to lead a pitch. Martin won coin toss for first, i backed off second on first move, let martin have a crack at 3rd cos its THE pitch, then it was dark for the last one and knew martin would be quicker. Top quality route, no consolidated snow, basically dry tooling.
Alex Mason - 2nd O/S - 08/Jan/10 with Martin Haworth

Epic. Arrived late,-10 degrees when we set off, started climbing at 12. Tremendous route, sustained climbing at my limit, fourth pitch done in the dark, overall 6 hours!Led all pitches.
Martin Haworth - Lead O/S - 08/Jan/10 with Alex mason

took a pendulum and lost headlight. some1 kindly helped me out. mini epic
glaramara - 2nd - 04/Jan/10 with dave almond

fantastic alpine day with Dave Ball.
Dave Almond - Lead - 04/Jan/10

Beautiful cloudless day - even had sunshine for the belays atop p2 & p4! No ice nor good turf, just unconsolidated powdery snow so it felt a little insecure in places but overall a fantastic outing. There were two other teams on the route after us.
DSM - Lead O/S - 03/Jan/10 with Andy Gittins

andy gittins - 2nd - 2010 with Dave Scott-Maxwell

completed in 3 pitches. Generous amounts of deep unconsolodated snow all the way. Wouldn't grade it a VI tho', maybe a V but definitely a good IV.
