Pinnacle Ridge*** III
[3rd belay in very muggy conditions, doesn't do the location justice. , 1 kb]200m.

Rockfax Description
180m. From the obvious bay with the slab on its left hand side climb the well defined rib on the right for a pitch. After this trend slightly left and go up to a groove below a corner. A number of lines are possible through this middle section as the ridge isn't so well defined. Climb the groove to what must be one of the best belays on a route in the lakes in winter. Step up left behind the belay and continue to the top. If you want to make things a bit harder step out right on the top pitch and follow exposed steps to the top at a harder grade. © ROCKFAX

Thanks to Chris Smith below for a good description of this route. Its a bit of a misnomer as there is little ridge climbing, maybe it should be Pinnacle Groove, there are even 2 small chimneys on it. Good climbing on the last 2 pitches

Great climb when we finally found it, ended up doing a whole different, shorter and crappier ridge of to the left. The FRCC image if gable crag in the logbook is pants and the description is rubbish too. I will try and describe it bette here so people don't make the same mistake we did. To find the route head to the lowest part of the crag which is a buttress and looks like the start of the route (not shown on the guide book photo), there is a large bay to the right leading up to a gully. From here look about 70m right and you will see a large slab with a small gully/groove to the right of it. To the right of this you will then see the start if the ridge itself. Climb the rib on the right of the slab and gully until you come to a flat area and the first belay (thread through some boulders). Go past a stumpy pinnacle directly behind the belay and onto broken ground trending left into a wide groove / corner and easier ground above. Trend back right until you end up at a large spike, ledge and belay. From here step right and into a groove system with some trickier steps higher up and then onto a great belay with the pinnacle behind you and lots of chockstones. Stand on the chockstones and make a commiting step up and onto the ground above, head straight to the top from here.

Soloed up to the start of the pinnacles, then pitched the two two sections. Good conditions, frozen turf and good hooks. A great day out.
Puma - AltLd - 18/Jan/15 with Will Smith

Soloed as far as the big ledge about 10m below the pinnacle belay. Paul led to the pinnacle and then I led to the top. Great route with varied climbing. In these conditions, it was mainly climbing on frozen turf and the crux would be unclimbable without frozen turf. The lower half of the ridge is pretty ill defined so we wandered about a bit, picking the best looking and most frozen line.

Great condition - solid 3
Ed - AltLd - 17/Jan/15

It's a II in my guide, so I thought it'd be good for a quick solo! Great route. The crag needs more freeze-thaw for any routes with essential turf placements or damage could be done. Otherwise the mixed routes were looking very white and rimed up today.

Wet to start and got colder as we climbed, the top 100m were nicely frozen

Good conditions, only very few odd patches of unfrozen turf. Scary crux with the massive drop behind you

The crag looked really wintery with fair amount of rime but we found out quick that the turf just had an ice crust! Enjoyed the route, although we topped out 5pm due to a late start following backing off Sledgate Ridge.

Retreated off Bottleneck Blues due to conditions. Finished on last two pitches of pinnacle ridge.

Very good route, topped out 5pm after a late start and messing around trying to find another route first. Descended in the dark (again)

Crag to ourselves, bit of a wander off line on P1, but traversed back in which was intersting. Groove was great fun and top pitch (peri) was good as well. Snow soft and poor mostly - apart from top,
lithos - AltLd - 09/Mar/10

good fun, very soft snow, thought chockstone pitch was harder than the top pitch.

Not in good nick, but saying that the last 2 pitches were more frozen (still no ice just better snow/turf). Me P1, Karlos the rest.
eldre070 - 2nd O/S - 27/Feb/10 with Karl

Great route, getting better with height. Soft snow low down, with not much gear. Conditions improved where it mattered on the chimney to the pinnacle and the pitch above.
