A great route in better than expected weather. I would agree with others that the crux is not the Knight's Move pitch. The chimney pitch just after it felt harder...but maybe I was just knackered by then! Sean led all but one pitch. Thanks again to the patient team behind us [Ed and Pete] who retrieved Sean's dropped belay device!

Very busy route but got there in second place. Lower section very spaced out and lots of grassy banks until the ledge is reached. Climbing starts here! Great climb. STarted by soloing the first 4 pitches in Tshirts, the higher we got the more damp and icy the rock became and the more layers we decided to put on. We decided to lead the last 4 pitches. The last couple of pitches were particularly interesting as we had to dig holds and gear placements out of the snow with numb hands.

The pitch prior to the knights slab, where you climb the right hand rib and manouver over to the left hand rib is probably the crux I thought. That or the move around the corner off the Knights slab.

had wanted to do one of these for a while! at last a sunny clear day with no wind and no hill fog! left campsite at 7.45, circa 1.5 hours to heather terrace and start of route marked by GA in white letters. took one pack between both of us. circa 4 hours for the 8 pitches (more like 6 as two are walks). we were the second party on the route so had a clear run. polished first pitch quite traditional. nice third pitch in the corner past the capped roof. best pitch was number five up the grooved arete, pitch six knights move brings some fun exposure, polished pitch seven, followed by a fun romp to the top. 1.5 hours descent to campsite via south ridge.

Beautiful day, we where the only people in sight. This was my first big mountain route and it did not disappoint. Although it was very polished in places, in the dry this is not a problem. Technically it is only a HVD although the exposure can make it feel at least a grade harder, VDIFF leaders may struggle.. The pitch before the knights slab is the crux with the step left being a bit of a leap of faith. The birds nest belay after the knights slab is, er, interesting to say the least. I will repeat this route!

What an epic! Only started walk-in around 1, so much too late. Climbed P1 as 2 groups of three, scrambled past the next 3 pitches on icy grass, then led P5 and followed up P6 and 7, by when it was completely dark. Rob struggled below and Peter abbed down to help him, and later 2 other guys who had got in trouble somewhere to the right below and one of which had hurt his shoulder. At that time Liam - soloing - dislocated his shoulder and almost came off. Luckily Peter could clip him on the rope just in time. Then skipped P8 and went down the NW face as a group of 8 in 3 hours. Just back in time for the pub!

Attempted the GA for the first time on Friday 28th October. The weather was good, we started to climb just after 9am with just two climbers ahead of us. Led the first 5 pitches, struggled abit on pitch 5, but managed it eventually. Whilst on pitch 5, the other climbers were negotiating pitch 6 (Knights move), when I saw the lead climber take a fall, quite a distance!! When we caught up with them we established that he was ok, but clearly shaken. They made an abseil retreat. This unnerved us, given that we'd never witnessed a fall before (only started climbing in March 2011). After discussing we decided to carry on and attempt the Knights move. At this point I managed to get 3 good pieces of protection in whilst moving left on the slab above the spike belay, but it was very wet and covered in moss. I made 3 attempts but could not progress because of the wet surface and moss, on retreating I slipped and took a fall (first experienced), protection held and Abi had a good firm stance, so ok, a part from sore backside and grazed skin. Consequently made an abseil retreat. Can anyone help me regarding which way you approach the knights move once you move above the belay spike, left or right?

Started too late - guidebook a bit misleading in a couple of places! Held back a bit by rescuing stranded scrambler & queue halfway up... Nice pitches though, esp. Knight's Move. Tough rope drag on 2 pitches but didn't help ourselves by having only a couple of spare short slings... Descent in the dark - don't recommend that! Great climb in all though.

Abbed off last finish due to storm coming in and sun going down. Scrambed up the side of last pitch to finish, walked oof by moonlight as headtorch had smashed in bag. got stuck behind about 6 pairs and three's. One Uni club had bought a lead ans 2 seconds on it as their first ever route - a tad inconsiderate as one of them weas a complete numpty and shouldn't have got past the slabs by the cmapsite !!!

Found the 6th Pitch traverse quite horrible with bugger all foot placements/smearability, took a 'fun' fall/swing from below the roof.

Had a real off-day so partner led the whole route. Found it really hard going but maybe that was because I was in an indescribably foul mood all day - sorry Ian! Long route, very VERY polished. First pitch crack is horrendous. Crux pitch (Knights Move) isn't that bad actually. Some very tricky sections, certainly felt very hard for a VD (as it was in the Ogwen book). Confusing, very hot walk in and walk-off from the true summit in the dark (as is our style) made this a long, long day. Great sense of achievement, though!

Although the middle of summer, we were aware of time pressure and I led the whole route to speed things up a little. Superb outing, pitch 5 was the stand-out section, and three happy climbers returned to the lay-by some 11 hours after setting off. Encountered some difficulty in locating the descent route, it was poorly indicated in our guide book.

The rock and the position of the climb, for the grade is remarkable. I would hold back on the 4th star only as a couple of pitches let the overall experience down slightly..

Good climbing - slow party in front, choice of either ab or epic climbing in the dark. Ab it was, will be back..!
Lenny - AltLd dnf - 20/Nov/10 with John, Paul
Mission to retrieve gear off route - decided best idea was to climb up above and ab down as gear was off to the right, moved together for first two pitches then climbed - tried to do a quick scramble route but ended up doing a short silly VD traditional style chimney getting stuck with bag, after that should have climbed green gully but instead went up somewhere between the two routes! Got up to knights move slab and took a 10m sliding fall off the awkward crux move - ended up sat on the belay block! My own fault for rushing - was pulling on gear to make the move (which popped!!) and had a sling on the belay block - which promptly lifted off. Abbed off whole route down green gully after. Disappointing! Was very wet and tried to climb in 'hiking trainers'. Mistake. Will be back.

Singleton_Alex - Lead rpt - 13/Nov/10
Had an epic. Managed to unknowingly wander onto what I now think was the VS Super Direct route where things got very bold, very muddy and very slippy very quickly. Made one bold, committing and unreversable move (felt like 4C, maybe 5a with the mud) up to what I thought was going to be a belay ledge, but it turned out to be foot wide clump of grass with a single crappy nut placement 10 - 15 metres above and out of sight of my last placement. Slab above me looked easy tbh but was streaming water, covered in black moss and looked nigh on unprotected. As I knew I was off route, I didn't fancy continuing to boldly climb wet stuff into what, for all I knew could have been unclimbable territory, and risk getting faced with 1 dodgy nut keeping me from a 30 or 40 metre lead fall straight into a gully. Game over, I got on the phone to OVMRO, who were, of course outstanding. :(
Tomber - AltLd dnf - 12/Nov/10 with Stuart Hurworth
All going well until 4th pitch above path - my leader went the wrong way heading up diagonally to the right of the route, the Superdirect. He got stuck there on a small ledge with wet rock above and some very poor protection below him on a full ropes length. He called MRT - after bit of a wait we got winched up - allegedly by Prince William according to the Ogwen MRT guys. An experience but not one I am proud of!

The mountain weather forecast said no rain but it pissed down all day. Took two hours to find the route after missing the way to heather terrace and then walking past the start twice - once in each direction. Overall eight and a half hours from car to car. Hi-light was looking down on a glorious rainbow from the top of pitch 4. Hard to judge the grade in the wet but felt well scary.

Fantastic route once we found it, though the walk is is a bit of a slog. Moving left across the grooves was interesting and the Knights Move traverse gave a great feeling of exposure at height.

Weather deteriorated. By the top it was raining and very gusty. Got completely soaked the scrambling up to find Adam and Eve, and then going back down to the Heather Terrace.
Thought the overall route rather disappointing. I guess 3* if you are a VDiff leader, but otherwise not. Flying Buttress is much better VD.

Led all pitches, Matt's first multi-pitch and first mountain route (rain, thick cloud and midges all adding to the experience!) Some nice pitches - the arete, knight's move slab etc but not as continuous as I'd hoped it would be, with lots of grass between the good bits. Descending the wet west flank in the rain was, erm, 'fun'.

Lead first to fourth, sixth and eight pitches. V led the fifth and seventh. Fifth pitch given as 30 m and is more like 50 m! Still, not a problem - loads of places to get in gear and set up a belay. In fact, pitches five ad six are the best two and give the most fun. The Knight's Move slab is great fun.
Lumbering Oaf - Lead O/S - 15/May/10 with Verity Payne
Superb weather, led route with Andy & Phil following on separate ropes to speed things up - plan blown by party of 5 ahead of us, causing us to wait for up to 75 minutes on 2 different ledges !! Great route, though and hard for the grade with wildly exposed moves on top pitches (especially the undercut Knight's Slab and the undercut groove to its right). Started climbing at 1130 and Topped out on Tryfan's summit at 2000 !!!!! Nice topping out to a glorious sunset though. Back to van by 2130.

I failed to see how it gets three stars. Just as you almost begin to feel as if you are climbing, you reach a grassy ledge, you set off again, and just as you begin to feel like you're climbing... The line is somewhat vague too. Nevertheless, it was good to get back out in the mountains. The weather was good, the route was dry and not too many other parties involved.

Every bit as good as I thought, truly memorable day. Every pitch throws something at you, pitch 5 before the haven being the crux in my opinion rather than knights move. Very sustained climbing throughout and quite committing for the grade - I can see many a confident VDiff leader getting a bit of a shock on this route! In my opinion this is as hard or harder than one or two severes I can think of.

Led pitches 2,5,6 & 8 with bex leading the rest. Was very polished, but didn't spoil the fun. I thought pitch 5 was the crux being long, steep and sustained with a tricky move to exit the top of the groove. I led 1-4, Bob led the top half. Brilliant fun, especially from pitch 5 onwards (the crux is on pitch 5 I feel). Apologies to the guy who had to wait at the top of the Knights slab for us to move off the belay stance where there is just enough room for two.
Poco Loco - AltLd O/S - 05/Apr/09 with Bob Barnes, Richard Roberts
James lead first 4, I did next 3. This was my first true multi-pitch. Thoroughly enjoyed it, also quite nervous at times. I thought the crux was the step from the right to the left groove on 5th pitch. Didn't have much trouble on Knight's, though in hindsight should have dropped in a bit more protection for my seconders. The belay stance at the end of it is tricky for three people. We had a beautiful glow of a setting sun on Adam and Eve. Unfortunately camera battery had died.

What can i say?! well its an awesome route, one of a kind!! the weather was dreadful but that didnt put a damper on spirits. john led all apart from pitches 3+4, which was the 'delicate' pitch. the knights slab is brilliant! still baffled on how you are supposed to belay on that little corner ledge, good job john didnt! we're coming back to do this in more warmer and drier conditions.

Very polished first pitch. Get in there early as it is a popular route and can take many hours to complete if stuck in a queue.

I led all but the second and pitch after knights move (7th?). This is going to be an essay. First pitch was wonderful! Up the polished groove, up the next one a little before moving out right up and over the crack! Belayed just above that butress but think I should have done it further back. Dad struggled getting into the crack and opted for the groove on the left. After much deliberation of route finding we thought we'd figured out the next pitch for my Dad. But it was wet so he went on the right arete of the capped roof and belayed near the top of it. Next pitch was mine, more of a scrambly one, but with a tricky first 10m! Extremely polished awkward crack which was a bit wet in places! Eventually arrived at the top of that just as I was running out of rope. Brought Dad up and we picked up the rope and moved a long path to the right, not a pitch. Then the next pitch looked really difficult for a HVD but it went okay, up until the top just below the Haven. I went right up to the top of the roof before realising there was no holds and I had to step down. I'd placed some gear which caused major rope drag problems! Dad followed in better style by the feel of things but didn't feel him! Knights move. Absolutely brilliant! Up the crack putting plenty of protection in. Was unsure when to move right but figured its "when you want" I opted for a little higher than the first polished foothold just above the roof. Move out right with fantastic exposure and enjoy it! Holds are all there and was certainly no harder than 3c but probably one of my favourite pitches ever! Such a great feeling looking down over the edge to see 150m's of climbing you've done before, a absolute classic route, with it all to yourselves! Move out right with trust in the guidebook to find the belay point. I set up my first cordletted belay/hanging belay, more for practice than anything and wanted to be able to block lead with relative ease incase Dad didn't fancy the next pitch. Dad enjoyed it as much as me I think! Shame is so small! Anyway, Dad fancied the next pitch, found a hex, and seated a nut that I couldn't get out! Guess he was making up for the second pitch when atleast 5 pieces fell out in sucession! Size 8/9 nut, if anyone manages to get it out it would be a much appricated return! Then the final pitch after some deliberation about the start we started around the right of the big block. Quite a bit more loose rock on this one so watch out! Some really nice climbing though I can't believe anyone would miss it out! Really rough rock, almost gritstone like! Brought Dad up and we were done! Enjoyed a chocolate bar whilst we looked over the fantastic views and lighting. Eventually, walked up the Adam and Eve, sat on it had "the" photo taken and set off down. Headed towards Ogwen and moved out right to traverse Tryfan. Easy walk down, after a fantastic day out, only to be partly ruined by Dad spraining his ankle some 15m from the carpark! He hobbled along to the car, bandaged it and drove to BK and then home!

Excellent day, window of opportunity, actually took 5 hours but not experienced really in this sort of multi pitch route. Very pleased to complete it. Somewhat off route at very beginning, started what must have been at least HS before returning to proper route and then despite numerous efforts to go off route onto VSs again managed to use old guide to find Knights move and recognise now the smallness of the holds and perhaps rather precarious middle move stomach knot. Completed with some aplomb however and finished with a smile pretty tired. After obligatory jump over Adam and Eve and 15 pressups on them went down to Capel Curig for superb Beef and guiness pie and chips before grim tired drive back to York. Great day out, thanks Andrew for carrying all the weight as second, good advice too.

In a fit of enthusiasm, I led most of the route. After missing the supposed block belay on Pitch 4 (old Ogwen guide) and assuming I was about to run out of rope, I set up a hanging belay in the Groove, much to the amusement of Roger, and the consternation of the woman in the party behind us. Old Ogwen guide lengths given for P4 and P5 are way out! Nice route, but shame about all the polish.

Is this the biggest epic on Grooved Arete?
In the winter of 1961/62 Brian Jones and I, both NSMC, were camped below Tryfan in temperatures well below freezing though not too uncomfortable because we were using equipment bought for use on the Reading University Vatnajokull expedtion of 1958. We were hoping for a good winter climb, my preference was for Grooved Arete because I knew the climb quite well. Brian was a relative beginner on anything but grit and had little experience of of snow and ice. So as leader I opted for Grooved Arete, in those days conditions rarely justified crampons, my favourites were tricouni nailed boots which were good on rock, ice and snow providing the snow didn’t clog up between the nails.
We started just after first light in cold clear weather with little wind. The first few pitches were fine interesting climbing until we reached the arete which was found to be a sheet of continuous ice, it would have been great with front points but not with our gear. I avoided the arete by going up the broken ground to the left of the normal route.
I eventually climbed up below a steep groove/corner. This I tried using a peg and an ice screw and cutting holds in frozen turf but after climbing about 70ft it looked really hard above, so having reached a little ledge I fixed a peg and retreated. We then got across to the start of the Knights Move slab which was verglassed, so I led it in stocking feet!! I told Brian to tie my boots to the rope in front of him. When he reached the Eagles Nest belay I couldn’t change back into boots so led the rest of the route in socks. When Brian started up I found he had tied the boots on 30 ft in front of him so when they jammed on a runner, he refused to continue on a slack rope. The only solution was for me to tie off the rope and reverse the top 30 ft to rescue my boots. Brian then finished the pitch. All in all a great day. I went back at Easter with John Roberts to retrieve my peg from the groove, John led the second pitch which was quite hard. At the time I thought we had done a variation to the Terrace Wall girdle at the back of the Bastion. It seems that it was a new route and is now graded HVS.
