Despite 2 valiant attempts my partner understandibly retreated to the ground and I abbed down from the spike. We shall return. Found the pitch very long and used up most of my gear.

Lovely outing - only marred by the scream and loud thump from the next bay, which sounded scarily like someone decking out. Turned out to be a torso sized lump of rock that a leader had pulled off which landed about three inches from his belayer. Lucky.

Due to route finding error I lead up an HVS (Gryke) passing the crux before I realised my error. I traversed back onto the route and continued to the stance. Nick couldn't follow the 4b crux of the proper line, so I abseiled down, top roped the first part of the pitch and set up a stance just above the crux to talk the others through it.
