Very Alpine! Solid neve on the way to the climb. Some nice ice on the approach to the ridge. The lowest 50m of rock was bare and considered taking off my crampons. After the first steepening there was much more snow on the route and made for fast going. Airy in places but nice scrambling all the way, a couple of spicy moves but nothing too bad. Made good time but can see how this would be time consuming roped up/under powder. Superb day.

Went to do Gendarme Ridge but took some overalls/ grooves low down & realised I'd gone on to Oldy! Great conditions, lots of ice, soft wet snow, mini cornices on route, little vis. The guys who were going for Golden Oldy ended up on Western Rib by the look of it. The joys of limited visibility.

Bailed off at the bottom as we managed to trigger a number of small slab avalanches on the very bottom of the climb. Excellent frozen turf away from the snow, will be fantastic once consolidated.

Can't decide whether we did this or Gendarme Ridge; The cloud was very low at the bottom of the route. Fun 45' ice at the bottom which lead to easy ground before the ridge became more prominent. Moved together for the last few hundred meters.

Powder snow, with turf frozen at depth, a few inches of ice here and there, and plenty of easy angle rock for footing, the ice was not sustained. It was snowing, but sheltered until topping out into a gale, and whiteout. We all walked in a circle for a few minutes, until Dave navigated us off with a compass bearing.

A traditional route and traditional weather to go with it. 90 minute walk to roughly whether the route was, then another 90 minutes finding it in the clag. Just as we were debating whether to call it a day, the clouds parted briefly and we saw the start about 100m above us. We pitched the whole thing in about 9/10 pitches. Could have moved together on much of it but wanted to play it safe as it was my return to climbing, 6 weeks and 1 day after knee surgery!

A long and committing route and the conditions (lots of unconsolidated powder snow over rock) made for quite a challenging day out. Much scrabbling around for decent axe placements and footholds. The steep buttress pitches felt moderately desperate at a couple of points - pretty run-out and felt like very technical moves for a Grade II! But it all came good and thankfully we topped out before it got dark - unlike other less fortunate parties on the crag. The very airy and horrifically unstable upper ridge was incredible! Must have been in the zone by that point... Mark's first proper winter route, for which a medal is in order...
